AI and Digital Transformation for Sustainability

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies are increasingly positioned as solutions to global sustainability challenges — including environmental and social sustainability with a wide variety of applications like supply‑chain efficiency, systems optimization and urban services. At the same time, the rapid growth of AI and digital services brings rising energy demand, carbon emissions, and new systemic risks that are often invisible to users and organisations. This masterclass offers a balanced, evidence‑based perspective on the role of AI and digital transformation in sustainability. Using demos and examples from industry and student projects, we examine how design choices, scale, and governance determine whether digital systems reduce impact or unintentionally amplify it.
