What makes SCU Engineering's
Master of Science in Engineering Management and Leadership Different!

Technical Management Focus, Not an MBA

Unlike traditional MBA programs, Santa Clara University's Engineering Management and Leadership program is specifically tailored for engineers and computer scientists. This is not a general business degree but rather a technical management program designed exclusively for those with engineering backgrounds. The program couples technical proficiency with business comprehension, providing the optimal skill set for a variety of management positions from technical product manager to chief technology officer. Students maintain and enhance their technical knowledge while simultaneously developing crucial business acumen, creating a unique educational pathway specifically designed for engineers with leadership aspirations

Silicon Valley Industry Professionals as Instructors

A standout feature of the program is that management courses are taught by Silicon Valley industry professionals who bring their extensive real-world experience directly to the classroom. This provides students with insights and knowledge that go beyond theoretical frameworks, offering practical understanding of current industry challenges and solutions. Meanwhile, technical courses are taught by the engineering faculty, ensuring academic rigor and depth in engineering disciplines. This combination gives students access to both academic expertise and practical industry knowledge, creating a robust educational experience rooted in both theory and practice.

Customisable Program Structure

The program offers exceptional flexibility, allowing students to design their own course of study based on their individual career goals and interests. During the first term of enrollment, students meet with the department chair to approve a personalized program of study. This flexibility enables students to select concentrations that align perfectly with their professional aspirations and industry needs. The program acknowledges that no one understands a student's career goals better than themselves, and structures the educational experience accordingly. This customization ensures that each student's educational journey is uniquely tailored to their professional development needs.

Balanced Technical and Management Curriculum

The curriculum requires students to complete a minimum of 46 quarter units distributed across engineering management core courses, technical stem courses, and the SCU Graduate Core. This balanced approach ensures students develop both management skills and advanced technical knowledge simultaneously. Core courses include organizational behavior, project management, systems engineering, finance, and marketing, while students also design a Technical Stem program to advance their knowledge in an engineering discipline. This dual focus prepares graduates to be valued contributors in both technical and business arenas, sustaining their technical vitality while advancing their careers.

Five-Year Bachelor's/Master's Option

For qualified Santa Clara University undergraduates, the School of Engineering offers an accelerated path to earn both a Bachelor of Science degree in their technical discipline and the Master of Science degree in Engineering Management and Leadership in just five years. This accelerated option provides an excellent opportunity for students to continue their technical education while simultaneously learning essential skills required to manage technical projects and people. The program is open to students in engineering and engineering physics, creating an efficient pathway for undergraduates to enhance their career prospects with minimal additional time investment.
