What makes Berkeley - Haas's
Master of Financial Engineering Program Different!

Bay Area Tech Ecosystem

The Berkeley Haas MFE program uniquely benefits from its strategic location in the San Francisco Bay Area, home to both Silicon Valley and the city’s financial district. This geographic advantage allows students to seamlessly integrate finance with technology, giving them access to both traditional financial institutions and cutting-edge tech firms. The curriculum is designed to reflect this blend, incorporating modern subjects like machine learning, AI, blockchain, and decentralized finance. The presence of dedicated fintech initiatives, such as the Haas Lab for Inclusive FinTech and a Blockchain Research Institute, further sets the program apart. Consequently, students often secure internships and jobs at top financial firms like Goldman Sachs and BlackRock, as well as tech giants like Google and Uber.

Business-School Focus & Industry Links

Unlike many MFE programs housed in engineering or math departments, Berkeley’s MFE is integrated into the Haas School of Business. This affiliation provides students with a unique combination of quantitative skills and business acumen, preparing them to excel in both finance and tech settings. Students benefit from the vast Haas alumni network, which includes over 41,000 members, and gain support from specialized career services typically reserved for MBA students. Additionally, the program’s curriculum is shaped by an advisory board consisting of senior leaders from top financial firms, ensuring that the coursework remains aligned with industry needs. This blend of business-focused education and strong industry connections is rare among MFE programs.

Experiential Learning: Internship & Capstone

A key differentiator of the Berkeley Haas MFE is the mandatory mid-program winter internship, which lasts 12 weeks and is built into the curriculum. This unique feature allows students to gain hands-on experience and often leads to full-time job offers. Additionally, the program includes an Applied Finance Project, where students tackle real-world quantitative finance problems, often sponsored by industry partners. The best project team is even awarded a $5,000 prize. These experiential components not only enhance practical learning but also significantly boost employability, making the Haas MFE a practice-oriented program.

Rankings & Prestige

The Berkeley Haas MFE program is consistently recognized as one of the top MFE programs globally, having secured the number one position in the TFE Times ranking and tying for first place in the QuantNet rankings. The program’s reputation for rigor and innovation, combined with its high placement rates, cements its status as a leader in financial engineering education. The prestige associated with the Haas name and the program’s proven success rate make it a top choice for aspiring financial engineers.

The industry-driven approach of the Berkeley Haas MFE results in exceptional career outcomes. Graduates from the program consistently secure high-paying roles, with a median starting salary of around $150,000, often accompanied by signing bonuses. The program’s close ties to top finance and tech companies, along with a dedicated career advisory team, ensure that nearly all students receive job offers shortly after graduation. The strong network of alumni and corporate partners further supports students in landing roles at leading investment banks, hedge funds, and tech firms. Frequently Asked Questions

Get all your questions answered about Master of Financial Engineering Program by Berkeley - Haas

The Haas MFE Program is one of only two degree programs in financial engineering offered solely under the auspices of a business school. Most financial engineering programs are taught in mathematics, engineering, or operations research departments. As a result, MFE students learn about computational finance within the context of business and economic principles, and enjoy the additional advantages of the business school's career services, corporate contacts, and orientation towards business applications. The Berkeley MFE program is also the only financial engineering program that includes mid-program, winter internship as part of the curriculum.
No, the pre-program courses are open to everyone. They are open enrollment courses, so you do not need to fill out any applications with the University. Because they are not part of the MFE degree program, you cannot get financial aid, student housing, or student visas related to your attendance in the courses. They are strictly courses to prepare you for the MFE program. You will receive grades and certificates of completion, but they will not be part of your UC Berkeley transcript.
Yes, as long as the degree will be complete before the start of the MFE program, you can apply. Simply send the most recent copy of your transcripts that is available, and we will use that for review.
Please send scans of official transcripts only. In addition, we need to have you scan the back of each page, as it often contains information that is important to us.
A "waitlist" status means that we are unable to make a decision on your file at this time and would like to re-review your file at a later point. We will re-review all of the waitlist files periodically through the admissions cycle and will provide updated statuses when they are available. Since we keep admissions open until the program begins in March, you could receive an updated status at any time between now and then. Of course, we will always notify you on the website with any status change as soon as it is available.
We will continue to consider all applications in the waitlist status throughout the year. Progress is important, though, so do keep us abreast of any progress toward completing your conditions.
